I just want to take a moment to thank Aconyte books and Marvel for allowing me to review silver stable payback early (releases March 21st 2023) and a thank you to Cath Lauria for answering my questions. The review will be out later this week.
1) Would you like to introduce yourself quickly:
I’m Cath Lauria, and I write everything from romance to horror to superhero stories! I’ve been lucky enough to write for Aconyte and Marvel’s Heroines line, and Silver Sable: Payback will be my third book centering a well-deserving character for this line.
2) how would you describe silver sable for those who aren’t familiar with the character:
Silver Sable, aka Silvija Sablinova, is primarily a mercenary and Symkarian patriot who uses her skills to support her home country as best she can. She’s often seen as a cold, emotionless character who’ll do anything to get the job done. Despite being unenhanced, she’s completely kickass and has worked with, and occasionally against, Spider-Man ever since she was introduced.
3) why did you want to write a story about silver sable:
She’s one of those characters who almost begs for more story. Part of the reason I was drawn to her is because there really isn’t a ton of lore for Silver Sable in the Marvel universe. She’s had some focus and attention before, but not in a long time, and I really like thinking about what motivates a person to do some of the hardest work in the world, going up against supervillains like Doctor Doom, when so many more “powerful” people won’t even do it.
4) Does the events that take place in Payback take place on earth-616 or an alternative earth:
They’re drawn from Earth-616, but should be considered slightly AU. We’re not allowed to directly impact the main Marvel timeline, lol, so consider this just alternative enough to be familiar, but not the same.
5) how long have you been working on this book?
Between the pitching and outlining process, actually writing it all, and getting through edits, I spent almost a year on this book.
6) is there a character you wanted to use but couldn’t /or couldn’t fit into the story:
Given how Silver Sable is going to be teaming up with Venom, it would have been fun to bring him and some more Spider-verse characters into the story, but I was stuffing it pretty full as-is. π
7) which part of the story would you say is your favourite:
I’m a huge fan of action scenes. They’re fun to write and fun to read. I love the parts of this book where Silver Sable and her team are on the move, working to take down their target and handling all the obstacles that get in their way.
8) is there anything in the story you think you could have done better:
Oh my gosh, in one of my earliest chapters I have Silver Sable being a little clueless in the face of a fashion emergency, which…the character is a fashion icon! I don’t know why I even put that in there, but it got through and now it’s in the final book and I’m more than a little abashed about that.
9) last question is there any other marvel character you hope you get to write a story about in the future?
So many. Oh wow, sooooo many. I got to revisit Black Cat in Silver Sable’s book; that was fun. I like being able to pick up with people I’ve worked with before, so no matter who I get to write, I’d love for Silver Sable to have a cameo in their book.
