Interview With Across The Spider-Verse Lego Animator Preston Mutanga

I spoke with Across The Spider-Verse Lego Animator Preston Mutanga About Across The Spider-Verse, Beyond The Spider-verse hopes and more.

I want to Thank Preston for answering these questions.

What Was Your First Reaction To Being Asked To Animate A Scene For Across The Spider-Verse?

It was definitely extreme shock- it took me a bit to process and I was really happy about it

How Long Did It Take You To Animate The Lego Scene You Did For Across The Spider-Verse?

To animate the entire scene, it took 3 months. One month went into actually animating, whilst the other 2 went into planning and contracts.

How Did You Feel When You Saw Your Work On The Big Screen At The Across The Spider-Verse Premier?

I felt really rewarded and extremely happy, since I got to see the hard work I put be enjoyed by other people. It was really nice seeing everyone’s reaction to my scene, I felt super happy.

If Given The Opportunity, Would You Like To Animate A Scene For Beyond The Spider-Verse?

Absolutely, I would definitely be over the moon if I got the chance to. I had such a blast working on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, so to be able to have a similar experience again would be incredible.

Did Life For You At School Change When The News Got Out That You Animated A Scene For Across The Spider-Verse?

School changed a little, yeah, I was more recognized in the hallways. My friends kept saying “I’m seeing you all over Tik Tok,” Some random people would go, like, “Aren’t you the Spider-Verse kid?” It was pretty flattering.

By The Way, Congrats On Passing 100K Subscribers On YouTube, How Did You Feel When You Passed That Milestone?

Thank you! I felt super accomplished because I’d been doing YouTube for like 3-4 years, so it was nice to see hardwork pay off. I’m greatful for every single subscriber.

Why Do You Love Animating?

I love animating because of the endless possibilities that’s possible. It’s so cool that you can think of anything, and then animate it.

When News Outlets Do Articles On You They Like To Bring Up Your Age A Lot, Is That Something You Are Ok With Or Does It Annoy You Sometimes?

It’s something I’m okay with, it doesn’t irritate me or anything. It’s the important part of the story anyway, so it’s cool.

Last Question, Why Do You Love Lego So Much?

I love LEGO because similar to animation, the possibilities are pretty infinite. When I was younger I used to build a lot of LEGO with left-over pieces, and I’d usually go off-model or not use instructions so that I could build my own thing.
