From 2016’s Captain America: Civil War to Marvel’s Spider-Man (2017 show), our friendly neighborhood wallcrawler’s reputation has been boosted drastically. It all started way back in 2015 when Tom Holland was casted as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, raising fans hype levels to all-time high. After Captain America: Civil War’s release, fans loved this iteration of Spider-Man so much that Marvel, Disney and Sony themselves joined forces like the Power Rangers and released a ton of new merchandise surrounding the character.
That was the day that the MCU re-introduced Spider-Man as, not just a high school kid again, but as an iPad kid version of the character. Throughout Peter’s rock bottom in Spider-Man: Homecoming, we see Peter as he lives without the tech-enhanced Spider-Man suit that Tony Stark had previously gifted him, thinking to himself that he’s nothing without it, but later in the 3rd act of the film, after an encounter with Michael Keaton’s Vulture, Peter was trapped beneath some debris (like in ASM #33). He felt like he lost, he felt like he wasn’t strong enough without the suit, but Tony’s words “If you’re nothing with the suit, then you shouldn’t have it.” lifted Peter’s spirit and gave him the strength to prove to himself that even without an enhanced suit, he is Spider-Man. He is a hero. It doesn’t matter what he’s wearing, or what he thinks of himself, he is still Spider-Man and I find that scene to be such a deep message for people around the world who think they are nothing without something.
After Spider-Man: Homecoming’s release, fans around the world started to love Tom Holland’s performance so much that Marvel, Disney and Sony decided to join forces once again and release Marvel’s Spider-Man (2017). The quality of the show not only disappointed fans, but made them realize that the MCU Synergy.. Is happening. Merchandise started to follow the MCU’s portrayal whilst still trying to be original, but they forgot one thing – The feel of MCU Spider-Man was there.
After fans started to realize this, Spider-Man Twitter basically went to war with one another, creating and continuing arguments throughout that side of Twitter. Fans, to this day, still argue with one another about which iteration of Spider-Man is the best, or what show remains superior when we all know, but fail to mention, The Spectacular Spider-Man was the BEST version of the character we will EVER get.
What are your thoughts on the MCU’s iteration of Spider-Man? Do you think they’ve given us the BEST or the WORST version of the character? Let us know your thoughts.
