Spider-Man The New Animated Series Review

Released in 2003, Spider-Man The New Animated Series (also known as MTV spider-man) was shown on MTV and was originally meant to be a follow-up to Sam Raimi’s first spider-man movie, but due to Spider-man 2 not following or acknowledging any of the events from the show, this series is considered to be on a different timeline than that of Spider-man 2 & 3.

None of the original cast of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man film are in this series, with Neil Patrick Harris (yes the guy from from How I Met Your Mother) as the voice of Peter/spider-man.

The story for the series was loosely based on the Ultimate Spider-man comics, the series was praised for its darker tone and voice acting but also received criticism for its divergence from the first Spider-Man film.

So let’s start talking about the show.

Yes, the animation doesn’t look great by today’s standards but if you can get passed that then I think you will love it.

The voice cast is Amazing, Neil Patrick Harris not only sounds amazing as Peter/spider-man but he’s also channelled the wittiness of Spider-man perfectly, you can feel his heart and soul coming through the character, which is why it’s a shame that this show never got a series 2, I would love to hear Neil as spider-man again.

Although a lot of reviewers weren’t happy about the way this show handled the Raimi universe, I think if you forgot about that, then this series is a great standalone show, that was not only dark, it also introduced a great side character that we will probably never see again, Indy, voiced by Angelle Brooks, the character felt like the yin to Peters yang, the chemistry was perfect, so it’s a shame she’ll probably never be used again.

This series also had an impressive cast of celebrity’s voicing small roles.

Stan Lee, Rob zombie, James Marsters (you might know him as spike from Buffy The Vampire Slayer) and Michael Clarke Duncan reprising his role as kingpin from the Daredevil movie.

The only problems I think people will have with this series are the cliffhanger it ends on, and the fact that a follow-up will never happen, not to mention that the streaming sites that do have this series, have the episodes out of order due to them airing in that order on MTV for some reason, so if you do decide to watch it here’s the correct way to watch it.

– Heroes and Villains

– Royal Scam

– Law of the Jungle

– Sword of Shikata

– Keeping Secrets

– Tight Squeeze

– Head Over Heels

– The Party

– Flash Memory

– Spider-Man Dis-Sabled

– When Sparks Fly

– Mind Games: Part 1

– Mind Games: Part 2

Would love a second season, but chances are it will never happen, so I hope they will add this version of Spider-Man in Beyond the Spider-verse, just so I can have so closure.
